Styles: TECH HOUSE / MINIMAL TECHNO
Isaac H. could be considered a diamond in the rough when it
comes to music
and DJing. Only recently has the city of Denver become
better known within
the dance music community, but this DJ has been along for
most of that
city’s ride to recognition. Sighting his early musical
influences to be such
artists as Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, KMFDM, RUN DMC, LL Cool
J, Sugar Hill
Gang and other early hip-hop and industrial groups, his path
towards the
electronic music of today was set at a young age. Other
musical influences
included Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys,
Pharcyde, KRS-1, and
Radiohead.
Over the years, his tastes gravitated towards “techno” and
“electronic”
music, and the all night parties that provided him with a
place to hear the
beats. He frequented parties for many years, learning the
insides and
outsides of promoting and party going. He also worked for
numerous clubs and
promoters, passing out flyers, working the door at parties,
and doing all
sorts of miscellaneous jobs within the scene.
It wasn’t until the late 90’s that the art of mixing,
programming, and crowd
control sparked his interest more seriously. Being friends
with some of
Denver’s most prominent DJs and producers has helped that
interest grow even
further. His early house music influences started in his
home town. Casa Del
Soul is a collective of DJs who were pushing, and continue
to push the
boundaries of house music, exposing people to new sounds on
a regular basis.
Little Mike is one of those DJs. For just over three years
Mike had a night
dedicated to the style of house being dubbed as
“tech-house”, and Isaac was
there to show support week in and week out. After many years
of just
listening to the music, this style of music grabbed his
attention and
reached into his soul like no other had before. Growing up
listening to DJs
like Sasha, John Digweed, Derrick Carter, Sneak, DJ Dan,
Barry Weaver,
Derrick May, Richie Hawtin, Terry Mullan, Mark Farina,
Sense’, Foxx, Ty Tek,
Wyatt Earp, Catt, and many others, helped to pave the way
for his interest
in this new sound. It was a sound that combined and infused
the sounds of
his favorite styles, and made them one.
With the idea set into his head, Isaac saved up the money to
get his own
setup of turntables, a less than perfect two channel mixer,
and some
bookshelf speakers. Finally, the records he’d been
collecting would get put
to good use. Because he had spent so many years studying how
his mentors
worked the decks and the mixer, the transition from
spectator to DJ was much
easier for him. Soon after he started DJing, his mixing
skills were noticed
by some promoters at local house parties. Being involved
with the Denver
music scene helped him receive recognition much sooner than
he expected.
Isaac received a few offers to play some small gigs, with
little to no pay,
and things took off from there. Through his continuous hard
work, self
promotion, and relentless determination to do the job right,
Isaac soon
became one of Denver’s most in-demand DJs. In the year 2000,
he joined up
with some friends to form a production crew who were
responsible for
throwing some of Colorado’s more memorable small to medium
sized parties.
The smaller parties and one-offs turned into weekly
residencies at some of
Denver’s most respected night clubs and lounges. His
dedication to quality
has earned him respect amongst his peers.
Isaac’s style has certainly become more versatile over the
years. His tastes
in house music range from the deep, dub influenced, and
techy sounds, to the
funkiest Chicago or West Coast sounds, and everything in
between. More
recently, Isaac H. has been hard at work in the recording
studio, learning
how to use music production programs and equipment.
